Many medications prescribed for ADHD and related disorders are used off label.
Off label means that a doctor can legally prescribe medication which has NOT been approved for use in children and has NOT been tested or approved for what it is being prescribed for but rather because the side effects of the medication may help the symptoms the child is exhibiting.
For example – Intuniv which used to be known as Tenex is a medication tested and approved for hyper-tension (high blood pressure) in adults. However, it is now commonly used for treatment of ADHD in children.
